Types of Pool Cleaners

There are three types of pool cleaners to choose from: robotic, pressure side, and suction side cleaners.

A robotic pool cleaner works automatically and do not need to be hooked in to your pool’s filter system to operate. Robotic pool cleaners suck water through a porous bag in order to remove debris from the water. Robotic pool cleaners are the easiest to use and the type that most pool professionals recommend. They work on any type or sized pool.

Suction side vacuum cleaners the pool’s recirculation and filter system to operate. Their hose plugs into a skimmer and sucks debris to the pools filter.

Pressure side pool vacuums use the pools effluent water line to propel debris into a bag attached to the unit.

Important Considerations

Some pool cleaners will require booster pumps. Usually, suction type pool vaccums will require a booster pump, but robotic and suction pumps will not.

It is important to consider how long of a cord and or extension hose you will need on your automatic swimming pool cleaner. This is determined by the size of your pool, among other factors. If you are purchasing an automatic pool vacuum, and you would like it to be able to clean your entire pool in one night, you will need a power cord long enough to reach from the spot of the on-deck unit to the furthest end of the pool. If you choose the right location to place your vaccum in from, you will not need as long of a cord.

When selecting a pool vacuum cleaner, keep in mind what material your pool is made out of. Many cleaners will work on both concrete and vinyl pools, but some will only work on one type.

Prices and Brands

Most automatic pool cleaners for residential pools will range from $200 to $900 dollars. Higher quality robotic cleaners will be more expensive, ranging $600 to $1200.

There are a number of different makers of automatic pool cleaners to choose from. Polaris is one company known for high end robotic vacuum cleaners. Expect to pay over $350 for these models. Other brands include Turbo, Pool Rover, and Tiger Shark.

Typical Warrenty

Most pool vacuum cleaners will come with a standard limited warranty for one to four years. Higher end robotic and pressure vacuum units will often offer longer warranties, from five to ten years.

I think robotic pool cleaners are awesome. I have the a Dolphin, but I have seen both a Polaris and Aquabot in action. They all do the job efficiently and with little imput from the user. They save so much time and money. Thanks for the hub.
