Weekend bags are ideal for those spontaneous travel opportunities, especially for busy professionals who need to pack at a moment’s notice. Choosing the right weekend bag is very much based on understanding how you pack, how you like to carry that weight, and what surroundings you will encounter while away.

Capacity

Weekend bags vary in how much they can hold. Generally, a smaller bag, such as a waist bag is perfect for summer trips, where light pants and blouses or T-shirts will be ideal. However, a larger weekend bag should be used for those occasions when you are visiting colder climates. If you travel fairly frequently, the best option is to buy a weekend bag that is large enough to double as a bag for a colder climate. Be careful about buying a bag that is too large, however. Exceptionally large bags will encourage you to pack more than you need, which will only strain you unnecessarily as you attempt to carry the bag. The relative amount of weight also impacts how easily the bag can be transported on airplanes and other restricted areas.

Strap Type

Many weekend bags for women can either be purchased so that they can be gripped by the hand, or with an additional shoulder strap so that they can be balanced on the hip as the traveler makes his or her way through busy airports. While the single hand strap is arguably more fashionable, the shoulder strap is more practical. Once again, the choice as to whether to buy a hand strap or a shoulder strap should be based on the frequency of travel. Those individuals who log considerable miles per year in and out of crowded areas will do well to have an additional method of support, while those who journey only occasionally will benefit from having only a hand grip to rely on.

Color

What is the ideal color for a weekend travel bag? Exceptionally vivid bags are fun and easy to spot, and also are harder to lose in a crowd of nondescript luggage. However, these vivid colors are also more likely to display stains and other unpleasant artifacts of travel. Purchasing a bag with a more rugged exterior that resists stains is a much more advisable course of action. Also, depending on the nature of the trip, a colorful but tasteful bag will make a better impression than a blazingly outré selection (depending, of course, on the impression one wishes to make). Being able to use the same bag for both personal and business trips is the best use of economic resources. Tastefulness is advised.
