From classic single clasp black leather bags to the more contemporary styled versions with multiple pockets and special anti-bacterial liners, a doctor bag purse can come in virtually every shape and size. When shopping, make sure you buy the bag that can best carry your equipment or supplies while keeping them sterile and protected.

Leather Doctor Bag

View leather doctor bags

Style: Doctor bags are traditionally made from pebble grain leather with a single clasp and optional key lock. Zippered side pockets may be featured. This bag is generally what people call to mind when they refer to a “doctor’s bag.”

Lined Interiors: The best modern leather bags feature anti-bacterial liners. This is ideal, especially for short journeys when equipment will be briefly away from a sterile environment.

Size: Although each bag can range in size, they are usually of a medium size that will fit comfortably in your lap. They are designed to be carried much like a briefcase, and therefore encourage the spatially compact arrangement of items.

Price: Less than a designer bag, but more than a duffel bag.

Duffel Style

Style: Often manufactured from lighter materials, such as buffalo skin or a blend of polyester and cotton, duffel style doctor bags can also come with shoulder straps for easier transport. They can have multiple side pockets with zippers.

Lined Interiors: The bottom is generally reinforced, although duffel style bags may not have anti-bacterial liners. Usually the material itself will have a waterproof membrane, but exposing sensitive tools to the interior is not recommended.

Size: Duffel bags are much larger than traditional doctor bags and many smaller purses, such as a waist bag.

Price: Generally the least expensive of all doctor bags.

Designer Doctor Bag Purse

Style: The finest craftsmanship goes into the manufacture of a designer doctor bag. Materials such as nylon and finely stitched soft leather are not uncommon. Great emphasis is placed on the location of the label. Zippered side pockets may be available.

Size: Designer bags tend to be the smallest of all doctor bags. They can only transport very limited amounts of supplies or equipment.

Price: By far, the most expensive doctor bag.
